Extração seletiva de madeira e grandes árvores na Amazônia: implicações para sustentabilidade ecológica e econômica. 2023. Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Bacharelado em Engenharia Florestal) - Universidade do Estado do Pará, Belém, 2023.https://bibliotecadigitaldetcc.uepa.br/handle/riuepa/487Large trees are species that have DBH ≥ 70 cm, beyond their timber value, are essential for ecological balance, as a significant portion of the ecosystem services provided by tropical forests is related to them. Therefore, we investigated the effects of selective logging on (1) demographic structure (DBH and height), (2) taxonomic and functional composition (wood size and density), and (3) biomass and carbon stock in assemblages of large trees in a terra firme forest in the Amazon, in pre and postlogging scenarios. In the Caxiuanã National Forest, Brazil, data used were made available by licensed companies operating in the region. For the pre and post-logging scenarios, the abundance of large tree individuals decreased by 44.78%, and biomass and carbon stock reduced by 51.10%. Species richness and taxonomic composition remained unchanged between scenarios. The assemblages of large trees were dominated by individuals and biomass/carbon stock in the canopy category (64.25% and 59.02%), medium wood density (58.02% and 50.77%), DBH classes between 70 and 90 cm, with 62.58% of abundance, and between 80 and >130 cm, with 72.88% of biomass and carbon, and commercial height between 14 and 22 m (89.65% and 90.58%). Our findings indicate that: (1) selective logging negatively affects long-lived species (canopy species and those with high wood density) and biomass and carbon stock in assemblages of large trees; (2) that species selected to explore require more time to recover than the time of fallow period stablish by current low. Therefore, sustainable management in the Amazon does not ensure the recovery of large trees, threatening the provision of ecosystem services and the sustainability of logging activities in the region.Língua PortuguesaAbertoAmazon rainforestForest concessionTimber forest productTropical forestSustainabilityAnthropogenic disturbanceExtração seletiva de madeira e grandes árvores na Amazônia: implicações para sustentabilidade ecológica e econômica.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (TCC)
