Since the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, several people found themselves needing to take refuge in other countries, including Italy. However, for years this country has also been a gateway to Europe for war refugees from Syria, who, when seeking security in the sovereignty of other States, observe different treatment given to them compared to the one given to Ukrainians. In this context, the center of the debate will be the analysis of the conditions of war refugees from these two countries, comparing the reception of the Italian government and policies aimed at these specific cases, in addition to explaining why there is such discrepancy in these relations, in light of pos-colonial and decolonial theory and orientalism. The hypothesis presented is that the refugee's identity is the main factor that explains the difference in treatment. To carry out this article, the exploratory research method was used, and data collection occurred from primary and secondary sources.
