This waste has a high energy potential and great availability because it is marketed and discarded in various parts of the city of Belém. For this, the objective was to demonstrate the technical viability of using this biomass, through the determination of the hermophysical characteristics, to compare the environmental impacts of the emanation of gases and particulates from the materials and to point out the positive and negative impacts of the substitution. The initial results showed an apparent density of 0.5075 g.cm-3, as it is a crushed material with greater compaction. In addition, the material had a moisture content of 9.13%, fixed carbon content of 19.64%, volatile content of 79.10%, ash content of 1.27% and PCS of 4,601.80 Kcal.kg-1, proving to be a highly viable biomass for heat generation with a focus on food production. Furthermore, the study showed that the PCS, the amount of total energy and the energy density of this material, for comparison purposes, surpassed firewood, when based on consumption patterns in volume of firewood in the establishment. Regarding CO2, CO and particulate emissions, the comminuted material showed lower concentrations emitted for the last two contaminants.
